Biography

I am an experienced Consultant Spinal Surgeon in both private practice at BMI Woodlands Hospital Darlington and NHS practice at South Tees NHS Trust, including the Friarage Hospital Northallerton.

I qualified from Bristol University in 1995, including several months spent at the University of Strasbourg, France.

Dan Fagan undertook his post graduate medical training in orthopaedic surgery in Bristol and Cardiff.

Having undertaken a year of experience in spinal surgery at the University Hospital of Wales, I chose to specialize and become a spinal surgeon.

Further experience at the World Renowned Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Hospital, Oswestry and a Spinal Fellowship at the Queens Medical Centre Nottingham fulfilled that aim.

Both Nottingham and Cardiff are the only two AO spine internationally recognized reference centres for spinal surgery in the UK

I enjoy living in North Yorkshire, I am interested in clay shooting, train regularly and enjoy tennis and snowboarding.

My practice consists solely of patients with spinal disorders and am particularly interested in the surgical treatment of conditions giving rise to lumbar and cervical pain in adults. My practice offers a variety of techniques which give good results in carefully selected patients.

My other main interest is more complex surgery to treat scoliosis (curvature of the spine) in adults.

I am currently the main driver in developing the Balloon Kyphoplasty service to bring this method of treatment to people with osteoporotic fractures in the Region. I am also one of the few surgeons in the UK who is pioneering Minimal Access Surgery for the treatment of backpain.

I provide Spinal care to the players of Middlesbrough Football Club and the Armed Forces in the whole of the North of England and Scotland.

In addition I recieve referrals from a wide population base of approximately 1.25 million over North Yorkshire, Teeside, Richmondshire, County Durham and Cumbria.

Alongside my orthopaedic spinal colleagues at James Cook Hospital, our neurosurgical colleagues have joined us to provide the only comprehensive combined spinal on-call service in the region which deals with all manner of spinal emergencies.

This includes the rare cauda - equina syndrome, severe spinal trauma requiring urgent surgery and patients with cord compression from tumour.

The Teeside and Northeast Regional Spinal Cord Injury Centre is located at James Cook University Hospital, myself and my colleagues provide surgical care for this facility.

My NHS practice is based both at Middlesbrough (The hospital has won several important accolades for quality of care ) and The Friarage HospitaI Northallerton. I have operating and clinic sessions every week.

I undertake private surgery at the BMI Woodlands Hospital Darlington and Nuffield Tees Hospital.
